    Default Website Design?

I've been currently working on a website and I was wondering about the design of it. For now I'm planning on making it based on Pokemon, so I did this journal for the landing page.

From there, when clicking on the arrow, I would then use HTML to fade into the next image which would officially be the home page. I haven't finished it yet, but it would basically be the book opened and it would have content in it. I haven't decided what kind of content would be in it, but I'm guessing the home page will be news and contain the navigation.

I'll edit with an image of the landing page as well, granted this is just the content div.

The intro pages were big in the 90's, but not so much anymore. 100% of all webpages today have information right away, even if it is just news about the game or updates within the site. Clicking around to get to a page to be able to click to the info gets rather tedious.

Coming up with a new Pokémon site is tough. I tried before and wanted to be centered around Little Cup and the lower tier battling. I had a minor following, but nothing really to go nuts over. With Smogon having 100 times more testing members then I could ever do, I was pretty much rehashing what they and Serebii had been posting. Even though I was doing a lot of testing myself, they were getting it done quicker.

Serebii, Smogon, Nugget Bridge, Bulbapedi, and Marriland all have dozens of people from all over the world and they get info before it is released most of the time.

I agree with this, and I think you'd see a lot better results regarding bounce rate (the amount of people who leave the site after only viewing one page) if you show your content right away. It's a nice design, though, so maybe it could be used as a background image behind your content or something. Also, you mention another image being the home page with content - unless I'm misunderstanding you, I would recommend making your content all text (like Buzz's post) instead of placing it in an image (like Buzz's signature text) since it'll be more beneficial for search engines.

(Side note: wouldn't you have to use JavaScript for that fade, or is there something in HTML5 I'm unaware of that offers that?)

Ah yeah, sorry I was looking at HTML simply changing the alpha with a mouseover. Javascript sounds about right and I agree that the journal is relatively out of the way of information, but I thought it would be a bit different than what the usual pokemon website does. I guess the opened journal would be enough or I can even just have the cover be animated and it will open up without the user needed to click on anything.

The main inspiration I was going from was this: http://www.pokemon.co.jp/ex/dungeon_magnagate/

Most images in HTML also have text associated with it, but not shown just for search engines. I cannot remember the tag off hand that IMG to do this. What it does is provide text for search engines and also for some reason if the image would not load it would show the text in place of the image.

But yeah the faster you get people to the information the longer they will actually look around your site, if that makes sense. Seems like an oxymoron.

Take for example one of the biggest complaints around here for years is how people first go to the main site here before getting to the forum. There is not a lot to do on the main site, compared to like Serebii or Smogon, so people notice the time spent getting to the forum. On Serebii you are usually reading the updates when you click forum and it opens in a new page, so when you finish reading the news you may decide to look up another idea that popped into your head while reading the news.

Serebii has maybe the best layout for information of any site I have seen. Smogon is a close 2nd, but given they are doing two different things, it is hard to compare the two.

Yeah, what I was planning so far was that the landing page would fade into the "home" page which could take you to the Forum, News, Pokedex, Weakdex, etc as well as have a brief description of the website. I would use image maps for the navigation but you can also use <meta> for keywords and descriptions. The Pokedex, Weakdex, and news would all be text but then again, I can change the home page to text as well with the help of Divs. As for now I'm just making mock ups.

In your img tag if you add alt.
    Code:
    <img src="smiley.gif" alt="This is a smiley.">
The alt will give text for search engines to add images to their search.

Well it's a lot easier to edit an HTML file than edit a PSD then reupload it with an FTP :P
