It's actually not too demanding a task - all you have to do is watch to make sure you pull in your fishing rod when you get a bite, lol (well, that and make sure you don't run from a shiny).

If I remember right you cannot run, so yes faint or capture.

Actually you are able to run without breaking the chain. I caught both my shiny Clawitzer and Seaking by running from everything else.

Yeah you can, I watched a YouTube video of a guy who programmed a device to chain fish until he got a shiny. It ran every battle and he always found a shiny eventually O_o

Yep, I ran from everything. If you catch something, I believe that breaks the chain, and you can't move from the same spot either.

I tried the fishing chain but still no shiny fish. However, I caught my first shiny last night in Pokemon X Friend Safari and it's a Pachirisu. Maybe the Odds are just better but still took me a long time in friend safari to find one and ones that you don't expect. This one appeared as soon as i entered the Safari while checking blank 3rd spots.
