    Default Queensland Floods

    Heya PokeFarm.

I just wanted to ask you to spare a thought for the people of Queensland, Australia.

    http://www.abc.net.au/emergency/flood/

An 8m 'Wall of Water' hit one town (EDIT: Toowoomba?) and the news keeps scaring me with expectations that another town will get hit by a 22m one!

If you'd like a reference point, my local indoor pool is 25m in length.
The 'Diving Pool' is 3m in depth. So if it does end up being 22m, that's over 7 times the depth of my diving pool, and almost the length of my indoor pool - and won't be heated, either.
The sheer amount of water/damage boggles my mind.

From the news, this is apparently the worst rainfall/flooding they've had in 3 decades or so, and 90% of it fell within 24 hours.

If you can, please take the time to read/watch - there are videos on YouTube that people have taken with their phones/digicams.

I'm in Victoria, which is two states away - of the 5 states affected by this torrent, Queensland has been hit hardest.

    Thanks for reading.

    Hey Tani,
Been watchin those videos. Crazy stuff. . . scary too. I'll be keeping you and any friends you might have in the areas hit, in my (content blocked). . . thoughts.
    Stay Safe.

Edit: I gotta say. You have to love all those people just standing there, watching two ton vehicles floating past them, and thinking welp. . . I should be good just standing here

Mother Nature sure can be unpredictable... :\
My prayers go out those affected by the floods.
Thanks for keeping PF posted, Tani.

    Slightly more accurate information
8m 'wall of water' has been described as an 'inland tsunami', which did hit Toowoomba with little to no warning.

The 22m I referred to is supposed to happen about 11am local time (theirs!) tomorrow, when the floodwaters hit king tide in Brisbane. 22m is the expected depths that those combined waters will reach.

For now I am fine. I have a few friends and family up Queensland way, but most of them are here in Victoria, which is nowhere near as bad. I'll be watching the coverage, and donating to the relief fund when I'm shopping.

They're not just reporting the tragic things though, it's really great to hear about people helping their friends/neighbours, even complete strangers! People in higher areas are offering accommodation; people with utes are offering storage space for valuables...
It's nice to hear about some compassion and humanity among it all.

SO just wondering, what is the name of this relief fund, if you happen to know it, or any other relief funds. I kind of want to help out by making donations and since I'm in my school's FBLA and stuff, and we do comunity service, I might as well try to get some donations for the victims of this "inland tsunami".

    Vas, thanks for asking/offering.
http://www.qld.gov.au/floods/donate.html is run by the Queensland Government, and features how to make donations by various means.

I know this is a double post, but I have something interesting to show you:
This picture is of a formation on a Box Tree known as 'The Bullock's Head' - as you can see, it looks like the head of a bullock (inventive, huh)

Believe it or not, this photo is actually not a very common occurrence.
I can only recall 2 times in my life that the 'Bullock' has had a 'drink' - and this photo is of one of those times. It is from September last year. The previous time was about 1995!

Today I was told that the Bullock's whole head is underwater!

This affects me because this is my mum's hometown, and where my Grandma still lives.

Her retirement home has been evacuated, but she is fine - and I hope she will remain safe.

My mum and my sister have to delay their trip to see her, because the roads are currently blocked due to floods.
We're hoping the floodwaters will recede within a day or so.

But... I suppose that the sheer mention of the 'Bullock's Head' does not mean much to people who haven't seen it in person - but the 'head' is in fact several metres above ground level, and the level of the river in which it stands (Richardson River) is usually... well, I'm used to seeing the roots of that tree.

There's also a giant fish behind it, a Nassau Grouper (it was used in the opening ceremony when Melbourne hosted the CommonWealth Games in 2006) so by now I'm assuming that while the 'Bullock' is drowning, the 'Fish' is getting a swim!

    Interesting tid-bit of info there.
    Interesting tree too!
I hope your grandma is in a safe place.
