Dynamic Duo - Protecting Thy Self From One's Enemy! And...Commrade?

Rate this Entry
Welcome back to issue #3 of Dynamic Duo - The Art of Double Battling. This one will be a fairly short issue but an important one nonetheless. We're going to discuss the use of a helpful move called Protect (also the same as detect). This move protects yourself from being hit by any attacks and has a 50% chance of activating the second time you use it again right away. If your opponent switches out and you use protect it will fail automatically. However, you will be able to use it again when your opponent brings out a new pokemon with 100% chance of it working. This move is always good to help scout out your opponent and get an idea of what they are going to do as well.

Protect/detect can also protect yourself from being hit by a team mate's move such as surf or earthquake. Usually the latter is easier to protect against by using a flying type. But the former is a bit more difficult. Protect will help with that. It's always a good idea to have it on at least one of your team members.

However, don't abuse the move as if you get predictable in using it your opponent is bound to figure out your strategy and calculate when they will attack you. You also don't have to show your opponent right off the bat that you have this move so they can't plan on you using it. Beaware in conditions such as hail or rain, blizzard and thunder, respectively, have a small chance of hitting through protect.

Another move you may never encounter, but is still rarely used, is the move Imprison. This prevents you from using a move if your opponent has the same move as well. Some battlers like to use this move with something that knows protect so their opponents won't be able to use protect on their pokemon. Now with Detect, the chances of this being blocked are very slim since only a small handful of pokemon can learn Detect. Protect is a TM move so it can be bred/taught to any pokemon.

Enjoy your double battling folks and hope this helps!
